Tomo and Misui were married at the Holy Innocents Church, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. A quaint church located in Lahaina. The wedding chapel includes a room suitable for the bride to dress and make up, and a private changing room for the groom, the couple's parents and other important guests. There is a place for the families to meet and formally introduce themselves (goshinzoku shokai), a studio or photography, and a room suitable for the reception party. Each part is staffed by highly trained professionals who make it their business to ensure the couple enjoy their special day.
The pastor gives a brief welcome and introduction, then announces the bride's entrance. The doors swing open and all faces turn to see the bride gracefully enter the walk down the aisle. Usually the bride is escorted on her father's arm. The wedding procession is a magnificent moment! It includes the ring bearer, best man, ushers, bridesmaids and flower girls. The procession ends with the groom bowing to the bride's father. The father returns the bow. In Japan, the bow is an art and this exchange is especially significant as the father is handing his daughter over to the groom.
The service is given in Japanese and English. Prayers and blessings enable everyone to understand the vows of marriage.
Sake-Sharing Ceremony
The traditional Japanese ceremony is a Shinto ceremony, though many Japanese in America celebrate weddings with a Buddhist ceremony. Regardless of religious rituals, most Japanese also include a cultural sake-sharing tradition at the wedding, popularly called san-san-kudo -- san means "three," ku means "to deliver," and do means "nine." This ritual dates back to a time when sharing sake created a formal bond as strongly as a handshake did in Victorian times. Using three flat sake cups stacked atop one another, the bride and groom take three sips each from the cups. Then their parents also take sips (for a total of nine sips), cementing the bond between the families.
Honoring the Parents
Japanese weddings usually take some time to acknowledge the parents of the bride and groom. In some weddings, the couple offers bouquets of flowers, a toast, or a personal letter of love and thanks. Any of these gestures is a beautiful way to honor your parents at the wedding.

Bless your path together by beginning your journey on this ancient sacred path!
Eve Hogan is the only wedding officiant on Maui who performs labyrinth weddings.
The symbolism of the labyrinth lends itself beautifully to the marriage ceremony. Metaphorical of a pilgrimage to a sacred place, the journey into the center is a time for letting go of the past and preparation for what is to come. The bride and groom walk into the labyrinth individually, affording them time to become self-observant, to release any past obstacles that may be in their way and to become fully present by the time they reach the sacred space of the labyrinth's center.
Met there by Eve, the center represents the sacred ground of the heart. Here, the ceremony takes place as the two join their lives through the ritual celebration of vows.
Once the ceremony is complete, the couple join hands and either follow the same path back out or together create a new path that spirals them back out of the labyrinth. This part of the experience represents the Union, where they emerge from the labyrinth, beginning a new aspect of their journey together as husband and wife. They carry with them the blessings of the Divine to guide them on their way.
Labyrinth Ceremony/Vows (Substitute "Bride" and "Groom" with your names):
Before entering the Labyrinth:

There is significance to getting married on the labyrinth. It is an ancient symbol, as is marriage, and in walking it today, we honor all of those who have walked ahead of us and all those that are yet to enter.
The labyrinth represents the sacred journey, a pilgrimage of devotion-which, of course, marriage is also.
The labyrinth offers an arena for letting go of the past as you walk in,
embracing the present and each other as you meet in the center and
boldly venturing into the future, together-body, mind and spirit-in union with God as you walk back out.
The very process of walking the labyrinth is that of engagement in life, the making of one's commitment to God and today, the choice to walk your path together from this day forward.
The labyrinth walk is a three-fold journey.
The walk into the labyrinth is a time of preparation.
You will walk into the labyrinth individually, emphasizing the knowledge that while you are on this path together, you are each individuals as well. As you walk into the labyrinth, as in life, you will find that there are times when you are walking close together going the same direction. Other times you may find that you are far apart, seemingly on different paths, going different ways. Remember that you are on the same path. Trust the labyrinth, trust life, and trust in God that the path will once again deliver you to each other.
As you walk in, observe yourself to see what thoughts emerge, what memories come to you, remember the times you have had-both the easy and the difficult, the joyful and the sad. Consider where you each are personally in your life right now, and where you intend to go. Simply observe each thought and feeling, release it and let it go, as if releasing a dove, and allow it to fly away.
The center represents receptivity and illumination. It is here that you will be showered with the blessings of God as you receive each other. The center is the heart of the labyrinth, so it is fitting that we will meet in the heart and share your vows there. Once you reach the center, I will invite your friends to join us there, surrounding your union with their love.
When the time comes to journey back out, you will make your way together. The walk out represents union with God and union with each other. You are welcome to follow the path or create a new path, all your own, as you find your way.

Another blue-tiful Maui wedding at the Olowalu Plantation House. A day full of excitement and so much fun! Take a look at the creative ideas that went into this Maui oceanfront wedding at the old and infamous Olowalu Planation House. Subtle use of whites, lime greens, soft colors to compliment the main blue color. An abundance of appetizers, open bar with lots of beer, wine and champagne, served prior to the dinner service provided a great meal for their wedding guests at this outdoor venue on the Pacific Ocean. After dinner, cake service and the opening of the candy bar. Many tones of blue and green at the candy bar! Quite an artful display of candy!

Some creative and organized brides love to plan their own weddings and do a great job! They have many unique and special ideas such as a photo-booth, s'mores at the fire pit, creative wedding music with their wedding processional choreographed by a good friend of the bride's, cookies and milk at the end of the evening, and hand-picked flower vases for each table centerpiece. They want to see the options of special linens and choose the exact colors for their tables. They have read dozens of wedding magazines, so they are up to date on what's new and exciting. They know what they want!
After having dedicated many hours of wedding planning, emails, and phone calls, it's time for the bride to hand over her notes to the Day of Coordinator for her big day, just around the corner. All last minute calls will be directed to the wedding coordinator on the wedding day. The wedding coordinator will be responsible for putting all of the special details and elements in place in preparation of the wedding day.
The wedding day arrives. The bride awakes to have brunch with her mother and Maid of Honor, before having a relaxing massage.
